Enough is Enough

Today I finally wrote the email that potentially (hopefully) leads to removal of an idiot from our main con team.

Let's see what happens tomorrow.

The Reason

This post is dedicated to the Stitch.

I was kinda quiet throughout the evening, not really because I don't have much to tell you. But I was distracted - thinking about what have I really achieved?

I guess it's a "depressing" thought when the best reason that we could come up for our job is money. I didn't want to accept that (though I myself is in a deep job-depression now).

To me, the main "driver" for me would be all the wonderful things that we could do with the money that we earned from our job, like...
buying Stitch dinner
buying my family dinner
sponsoring children
buying our new home
and knowing that we have money in our accounts when we need it for emergency

Maybe one of the reasons that I've allowed myself to dwell so deep in job-depression, is because I have forgotten to remind myself of all these REASONS...

Quiet

Been "quiet" here.
Been extremely busy - work, "part time" wedding planner, few dosage of "socializing" needs (which basically means different types/groups of gathering)

Still trying my best to fight off the negativity which came from the fact that my lead engineer is dependent on me o.O"

Today I really lost my head, and told him directly that
"There are things that graduate engineers are paid to do, such as reviewing drawings or attending courses or attending meetings to learn. Certainly reviewing HSE performance standards or design verification matrix should be lead's work."

Did that improve the situation? No. Cause the gap is still there (mainly knowledge on the project).

I'm losing the energy to even complain.

All I can do is - be quiet, do the work, and more work, and more work.
(20th is coming really soon.)

Lead Engineer vs Graduate

You know what's the difference between these two?

1. Lead engineer is supposed to LEAD, not to approach the Grad with puzzled face asking for directions on how to review drawings or respond to site team queries.
2. Lead engineer has the right to delegate - but delegation does not mean that you wash your hands off the issues. And it certainly does not mean that you can sit back and wait for things to happen on its own.
3. Lead engineer is supposed to make the Grad's life easy, while the Grad will do her best to make you look good (that was the working mode, until the recent change). If the lead try to make himself look good without 1st making the Grad's life easy, beware of disasters - ain't no free lunch in this world, aye.
4. Lastly, of course, the paycheck.

(I guess by now you know what kind of lead engineer I have.)
(Also you should understand the reason for my recent craving for food + weight gain which then leads to the need for more gym sessions.)

Tired

Came back from JB trip.
Very tired.
Spilled coffee, dropped a pack of milk onto floor.
Didn't do much whole day, except of trying to listen to stories.

Tired. Flying is tiring.

Silent

I have been refraining myself from talking to people. Don’t want to whine. I don’t mind people knowing that I’m unhappy and demotivated – but I just don’t feel like repeating the tale again and again.

The best that I can do now…
1. Remind myself that I’m not in the worst situation. I’m not the only one who doesn’t know when I’ll move to my next location. I’m not the only one who worked hard yet not being appreciated. I have been lucky to get a good boss so now I’ll just have to accept the fact that not all bosses are that nice to work with. I’m not the only one who’s working in a messy project team. And… at least my performance factor is not that bad.
2. I need to re-strategize. My old strategy doesn’t seem to work well. Instead of appreciating the additional value that I bring to the company, my bosses seemed to think that I’m not doing enough for my day job as I’m being distracted by my “extra-curricular activities”. They don’t seem to understand that my problem is not the workload of piled up drawings and reports – but the unstable organization that makes me one day a graduate engineer, and next day the acting lead engineer. All these transitions day in day out is driving me mad.
3. Stop worrying about things that are out of my control – put them all aside and focus on work and life! I only have 4 months left in KL, which is another reason that I’m feeling uneasy.

Anyway thanks to MV, BS and Garfield… for listening/distracting/letting me to vent…

P/S: This is the first time that I’m writing blog in office =P

My Boss

After working for 18 months, today is my 1st day at work - boss-less... My 70 years old Indian Santa boss has finally decided that he has had enough and it's time to retire again (probably for the 4th time). 2 weeks ago we brought him to Jogoya for his farewell lunch. And from now on whenever I am in trouble, I could only call him between 8am-12pm (that's 7pm - 11pm in Houston).

Wanna know how a 70 years old Indian Santa look like?

Posing happily with his shield....

Next thing you know...

Well, this is what we called as EDUCATION....

1st Anniversary of Working Life

My blog has been abandoned for quite some time. I was just too busy because of everything else - work, training, facebook, getting sick/getting rid of wisdom tooth....

On 18 June I "celebrated" my 1st anniversary of working life. I put this up in my MSN personal message, and guess what, most of the people who nudge me with their comments were pretty sarcastic. But truth is my 1st year wasn't really that bad - in fact much much better compared to my expectation.

In the past 12 months:
1. I flew more than the total accummulated miles that I flew in the 22 years before I started working.
2. I guess I had a real spike of my cholesterol level. I had oysters and lobsters and whatever good (aka unhealthy) food more than I have ever had.
3. I think I spent less money on shopping compared to uni time. Anyway I'm starting to get bored of my wardrobe.
4. Generally... I had a good time =) (especially having nice colleagues that you genuinely wish to hang out with after working hours!)

Busy Busy Busy

Been very busy this week, totally the opposite of the so-called honeymoon life for new grads that I heard from seniors...

But the good news is - my Houston trip is confirmed!! XD
So will be there for 2 weeks for a course, and plan to visit Pei at LA during the transit...
(But I guess I wont be going overseas in the next whole year... the costs is so huge to send us to Houston...)

Plenty of things to do now for the trip... somemore with my original work load... and hopefully everything goes well next monday so that I can go Miri for training (and see MV) =)
just cant wait to see my dear fren and claim my free dinner... haha...

Work Life Balance

My head is totally blank now, when i get home from work. Thats a prob to me. I need to figure out a way to draw a line between my working and non-working life. Well, now I can say that I'm partially succesful in doing so, but the side effect is that I'm roaming around the house with a blank mind. even when I read the papers, words just dont seem to register into my head.

help...

Working Life

Today was my 2nd day at work. Well, my starting is a bit adventurous. Yesterday I reported to 2 places, and today I reported to the 3rd location, and this is where I'll be working for at least the next coming 2 yrs.

Feel really exhausted now. I think my stamina and working capacity have dropped seriously after my 2 months break. Guess i'll need some time to allow my body to adjust to my new life style...

Overall I'm quite happy with my job now. The company is taking good care of us, the colleagues are all very friendly and helpful, and my job seems to be quite interesting and challenging...

But anyway, i'm just too tired to write anything interesting now. Nitez...

Meeting with Managers

2 weeks before this, I received a call from Shell Sarawak informing me that they've changed my 1st assignment to be based in KL. Thanks to the Law of Attraction, haha. So immediately after the CNY public holidays, I went to do the medical check up and SSB has arranged for me to meet up with 3 managers. HR manager, Capability Development Manager (which I had no idea what it is about), and Floating System Manager (this one still can figure out a bit).

And so last thursday (21 March), I went to the Shell Deepwater Engineering Office which is located in Menara Citibank, to visit my would-be-bosses. Basically they told me what kinda job i'll be doing, what kinda expectation that I can have from my job for the 1st year. And i got to look around at the office and colleagues.

Overall the job seems to be interesting. The 1st ever deepwater exploration in Malaysia. So gonne be learning about new technologies. And hopefully I'll get a chance to go Houston for my EP00 =) (And my future boss is an American =P)
